He stretches out even longer on the chaise (dragon making itself more appealing) )
I'm right here, aren't I?
( If Ish weren't petting his souldragon then maybe it'd be different, but it's literally be illegal to pet an extension of him and not he himself. He is the most important dragon in the room? Hello? )
ish stands, walking over to the chaise, small dragon in hand. he doesn't sit down on the chaise proper, since hwylryn is doing his best at being Long, but he does sit on the air next to it. host privileges of cheating. ]
I guess it would be unfair. [ hwylryn doesn't get pets exactly, but thin long fingers trailing across his crown and down the length of his hair. it's an extraordinarily delicate gesture given how pointy his fingers (claws) are, but it's done with care. ]
Hwylryn smiles with both surprise and a sense of pleased indulgence, closing his eyes as if it were the nicest feeling in the world. Sometimes, gesture means much more than sensation.
His dragon mirrors the sentiment - eyes closed, sighing (in that much cuter, animal way) as it settles and rests its head against whatever Ish's hand will be at, no matter how uncomfortable (cat energy).
After a little while: )
... Hey, Ish. ( A gentle voice. He's been a lot more sedate (for a Hwylryn) since the execution, like a light turned low. ) Are you happy with the way you are?
( Ish with his warm little magic and his warm little greenhouse... Ish, who plunged his hand through Siffrin's heart; who found delight in the mistrial... Ish, who has been working toward some end (has he been, for that 1,700 years?)... who's lived through pain and grief - and inflicts it in turn. Does he like what he's become? Is he happy with it? )
[ he's also quiet, lost in thought or maybe just paying very careful attention to what he's doing with his hands. ]
If I say no, what would you do about it? [ the question only hangs in the air for a moment, because this isn't something he needs to think about. ]
But the answer is yes. Rune used to ask me that all the time, in between him trying to find ways to kill me. I'm pretty sure that's the last thing he said to me too before I killed him. [ his memory around that is fuzzy for Reasons. ]
[ his expression is like the glassy surface of the lake, or the first few rays of moonlight peeking out beyond the clouds. understated, but with something underneath. ]
Is self-defense not a good reason? [ a joke clearly inspired by the last trial, because he laughs. ]
He thought I was going about this all wrong and I thought he was a traitor. We were the only two attendants left, so it was only a matter of time before one of us won. But to put it more simply than that, I needed his power too.
You were starting to sound like pretty much everyone else who talks to me. I get it, they've gotta ask questions so they can play the game, but—
[ he sighs, letting his hand get caught.
it's not even so much that it bothers him because he's really used to at this point, loops not withstanding. maybe the thing that bothers him is how their talks have been different lately.
( Unlike the times before, where he'd just kind of shrugged it off, he does stop to think on it.
Yeah, he sees that. )
... Sorry. I was just asking to know you, but...
( ... But he can see how it's hard to divine motive when he's the game master, getting pestered about stuff all the time. He knows other people visit Ish, they'd even talked about them when Hwylryn was at the door, but he sort of forgets about them.
He shifts his hold. He'll take Ish's hand like before. )
... This game is important to you. Right? ( He's not gonna ask why! He has his assumptions, and they might be wrong, but he thinks Ish has a real motive for all this. ) So I don't really want to break it. And I don't want you to break, either.
( Like game master of the previous loop Ish was trapped in... And, he'll admit the talk during the crystal phone town hall about Ish getting fatigued did worry him. )
[ it's subtle, but he's more reactive this time when hwylryn takes his hand. he's either more focused than he was at the pond, or just more used to the touch. ]
You can't break what's already broken. [ it's only a little disparaging, a small smile on his lips. ]
... Hwylryn uses his unoccupied hand to sit up proper, squeezing Ish's hand in his. He looks - worried. hesitant.
What does he want? He always just follows impulse - goes with the flow of the harmony around him. But if he has to stop and listen... what melody does he hear? )
... I...
( ...
He raises his other hand - fingers lightly, lightly brushing Ish's cheek, like - he's trying to feel the shape of him there; see where the cracks run. And yet - he's a at war with himself. One hand grasps him tight; this other seems almost a little afraid to shatter him. )
... Is the only thing that can make you whole again your Goddess?
( For what it's worth, the question doesn't sound leading. The tone seems to ask - is that what you need? )
[ hwylryn. you ask him this question which is already a heavy ask, you squeeze his hand which he could probably deal with even if he would get a little lost. and then you brush his cheek with that expression and care that he can certainly see and feel.
he's doing nothing in this moment other than flushing a lovely pink against his violets and purples. ]
It's a sight he's seen before a thousand thousand times - humans and wizards he's charmed; magic beasts and all the things in between he's taken into his arms; the old and the young after an evening of sudden flight across half the world on a whim—
but,
this one, this time, makes him pause.
And he hesitates, like he'd rather bubble this moment in time, and take it with him deep under the sea, where no one else might see it, or mar it, take it from him.
But, like Ish said— time always moves somewhere. )
...
( The fingertips that so lightly brushes his cheek trace back, pushing aside a few strands of hair to expose Ish's warm cheek, and his palm so lightly comes to rest against it.
These aren't the things he came here to ask about, or even do. One thing of import, the rest of it spent on fun, and fussing over Ish. But now that he's here - now that he's been asked - now that he's broached a boundary he hasn't had the privilege yet to touch, he wants...
...aren't you already here? [ said a bit stupidly, a reflex as his lips remember how to form words.
he always pauses in moments like this, but in the end he's a creature of emotion and impulse. that's inescapable, as are the chains that wrap his heart, as are the sins that paint him black.
finally the rest of him stirs a little, not the pinks and reds because even magic couldn't hide his hues and he'd be liable to fumble the spell if he tried. the smaller dragon will need to accept not being the #1 dragon here, as he's lifting his one hand to place it over the one on his cheek. he knows it's there, but he needs to feel it on his own. ]
( Like his dragon had pressed into Ish's hand before, Hwy can't help but press lightly into his palm as he feels Ish there. His smile warms his cheeks, and his eyes hood slightly, like this is the happiest he could be in the world. The little dragon, for all its neglect in favor of the bigger dragon here, seems to thrum happily. )
... Then don't count on me to go anywhere.
( He's clingy! But Ish knows that. Ish knows that, so - maybe he won't (or will) be surprised when Hwylryn's face pulls closer. Their noses and foreheads brush, the air between their warm cheeks hot - their lips close,
but not,
quite yet. )
... So please... don't go anywhere, either. Even if you mean to come back.
( Whether it is to leave for awhile, or die, or otherwise - please just stay ... right where you are. )
[ he does know that. or maybe it's he thought he knew that and he wasn't wrong, but he wasn't right either. he is, as others have noticed, rather easy to get caught off-guard in certain situations. it happened the first time they spoke and for as much as he was badly acting at the time, the fluster was genuine. but it was easy for that to be a one time thing, because it wasn't at all serious and that wasn't even his real face in so many ways besides.
he also has ears all over the grounds even if he isn't literally in the walls. he doesn't pick up on everything but he has a sense of a shift of moods, especially between others. it's not lost on him who's getting close (even if he doesn't know the details), so he knows that hwylryn is like "this", that he gets along with most others, is overly affectionate and everything that comes with it. so having an interest in him, liking him has just been part of "this".
but it still bothered him, even if it was only on the point of pride where he didn't quite get why. because hwylryn's whims didn't match up exactly how he expected, post tia's death and more than that, post execution. letting him be a dragon again aside, he's under no illusion that being picked as executioner is a gift in most situations. and the trade they made after that was enlightening even if ish still didn't get it entirely (still doesn't in other shapes). what it had brought him was acceptance and fondness. the yearning, the desire, the acting upon it to follow whims will always be sweet to him, sickly so in some cases. if hwylryn is someone who encapsulates that, then he's a kindred spirit in some way. more than that, the reasons he had given him weren't that shallow at all. he felt that somewhere, even if he didn't express it at the time. but really, what he actually heard the most were cain's rendition of him at trial and hwylryn's response, and that very simple wish at the pond.
there are emotions he remembers, sensations he remembers from when he was young and knew nothing but happiness and curiosity. they're faded, worn, but still etched on his heart. he knows what he's feeling, the whisper of it he thinks—well, maybe not right now.
right now all he can see is gossamer strands of white, moonlit silver; he can feel the flutter of eyelashes and the warmth of their colors. he doesn't look at the world the way humans do, but that doesn't mean he's blind to beauty.
he opens his lips to speak and feels the way they brush against one another, just barely.
ah, he'll have to try again.
this time he curls his fingers, grasping ahold of "this", whatever "this" is himself. an anchor, even if it's only for this moment. ]
I couldn't go. Right now—
[ is it he couldn't leave right now, or that he couldn't and he has something else to say? he trails off there because he really can't string more than two words together like this. ]
( When they part, it will feel like going from sea to shore: the people will be grim, the steps there will be heavy; the prisoners there held by the warden of gravity. And these things are all because Ish has trapped them there, and he cannot argue with their complaint, and he can only be anxious as they discuss closer toward a means to kill him.
But, until then. He is here, and Ish is stumbling so close to his lips, and he is silly and warm, and Hwylryn feels what he had offered to Akira: why don't we put aside your role, why don't we set down our obligations and friends, and why don't we play, just the two of us? Why can't we? Why not? )
"Right now"...?
( His lips curl, his tone the familiar time of teasing. He's making it hard for Ish, huh. He's so cute. Ish is really, really cute. He wonders how many other people get to see Ish like this.
Selfishly, he hopes it's just him.
He laughs lightly, a prelude to mischief, before he releases Ish from his hold in both ways - before he quite unceremoniously wraps his arms around him instead, tugging him from his invisible seat and onto the chaise so they can flop over there, Hwylryn holding Ish against his chest. His heart thrums quick and loud; a happy caper in the fields of his heart.
Hwylryn does this because he wants to hold him like this. But he also thinks it'd be a little easier for Ish to break out of than face to face. A whole bit of selfishness and a little bit of mercy. You're welcome!
And his dragon, in the process, slipped off Ish's arm, to curl and coil and and settle around his neck, like Ish had done to Hwylryn the day before. )
Well, since I'm not going anywhere, maybe you'll have all the time in the world to figure it out.
[ well, at least now he can think again. it's not particularly coherent thoughts in the slightest, and he makes a sound something like a squawk as he's practically manhandled onto the chaise. this is the most he's let anyone touch him in many, many, years. it's unfamiliar, ticklish, and that's not counting the dragon his neck.
he could teleport right now and be done with all of this, but he stays. though he doesn't really settle, he's at least not squirming. ]
I know how to kiss someone! [ he does not know this, actually.
because this is the first time he's been in this situation in all of his years, even if he can guess at the shape of it through process of elimination and ghosts of desire he never let manifest.
he still doesn't know what's going on but that's what he manages to get out, so maybe that's progress of some sort. who knows. he doesn't. ]
( It's hard to ask if Hwylryn wanted to or not - instead of muddling around his sea-deep thoughts, let's crack him open and look inside: the answer is yes. He has. But that's also it's not a native thing for him, it's not a dragon thing exactly. It's something learned, and this - the holding, the touching, the coiling - is what he knows most naturally. Despite his forward demeanor, he's a little afraid to ruin what he has; he treasures it with care, and just holds it close.
But maybe Ish will regret introducing kisses, because now there's nothing to stop Hwylryn from wanting and asking for them and taking them. You keep giving him cookies!!! When will you learn actions have consequences!!!!!
But for this very first one, he's patient.
He grins so wide, his eyes narrowed but bright, like a delighted kitty cat. )
i'm not writing another essay again, but the answer is not no, and the only reason the answer is not a simple yes is because he feels like he's been thrown back thousands of years, staring up at the cotton candy skies of elysia instead of the humid glass panes of the greenhouse. he's never thought of anyone this way before and while he knows he's capable of it (because he has a heart and that's something not even he could forget), perhaps the simplest explanation is that the fact that he feels anything at all has arrested all of his thoughts from going any further.
but he's getting called out so he has to respond, that smile notwithstanding (that smile is in fact very distracting, just like all the notes he saw before, maybe for the first time).
it's hard to say what's natural to him, he who came to be in a humanoid form with the ability to transform as easily as he could breathe. he who clung to norna's hands and chased after her for hugs, he who would curl up next to her as a snake so he could better fit alongside her and fill in all the space until they were one. ]
I—
[ didn't say that, but he also didn't not say it, and arghhhhhhh. he bites back a fine, because it's more than fine. in what way? arghhhhh x2.
...
he leans in and presses their lips together. the kiss is soft, another contrast in how he is. he gets a little lost in the sensation of how it feels, warm and—he won't hold the contact too long if he has his way and he will also be furiously looking away again after. though this time it is exceedingly obvious the reason that he's doing so is because he's flushed red. ]
( If Ish hadn't done it, Hwylryn would've - but he's really happy that Ish did, first. Really, really happy.
Ish kisses soft and sweet, and Hwylryn follows in kind - light as sunshine; the breeze; the lapping waves at shore. Hwylryn's kiss is lingering, but not forceful - he'll keep Ish a few moments more maybe than he might've stayed, but lets Ish pull away to have his embarrassment. And he allows it, because he wants to know how Ish looks after he's been kissed - no, after they've kissed, for the first time. And he isn't disappointed in the least.
Ish will find Hwylryn's dragon rubbing its head happily against the underside of his jaw. If it could purr, it would. )
You're sooooo cute, did you know that?
( Alas, Ish turned away means he's wide open... With great mischief, he presses another kiss to the corner of his jaw, where the sensitive skin of his ear connects - and if he can get Ish to look his way when he does it, whether out of surprise or otherwise, he's going to catch his lips again (his secret evil plan). If Ish doesn't, then he will have to suffer a very different, grim reality: Hwylryn will kiss him again, the second kiss just against the tragus of his ear, which means now his voice is super close to it (his other secret evil plan). )
[ ah, he's made a terrible, terrible mistake hasn't he? to kill a witch, you need not pour water on them or tie them to a burning pyre, but simply bestow upon them a flurry of kisses.
here he is, trying to have his embarrassment and figure out just what is happening in his heart, when the smaller dragon (this too is his hubris because it's his fault that it exists) adds to it. he barely has time to process that when hwylryn sees fit to stomp on his corpse. kissing skin he didn't even know was sensitive is unfair enough, but the real killer is:
cute? cute??????
he turns back to refute this slander, when he's hit with a second kiss on the lips.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
what was he screaming about again? he doesn't remember, all he can remember is the feeling of hwylryn's lips on his. again he doesn't linger, but this time he doesn't turn away.

it's hard to say what's natural to him, he who came to be in a humanoid form with the ability to transform as easily as he could breathe. he who clung to norna's hands and chased after her for hugs, he who would curl up next to her as a snake so he could better fit alongside her and fill in all the space until they were one. ]
I—
[ didn't say that, but he also didn't not say it, and arghhhhhhh. he bites back a fine, because it's more than fine. in what way? arghhhhh x2.
...
he leans in and presses their lips together. the kiss is soft, another contrast in how he is. he gets a little lost in the sensation of how it feels, warm and—he won't hold the contact too long if he has his way and he will also be furiously looking away again after. though this time it is exceedingly obvious the reason that he's doing so is because he's flushed red. ]

If Ish doesn't, then he will have to suffer a very different, grim reality: Hwylryn will kiss him again, the second kiss just against the tragus of his ear, which means now his voice is super close to it (his other secret evil plan). )
Way too cute.

here he is, trying to have his embarrassment and figure out just what is happening in his heart, when the smaller dragon (this too is his hubris because it's his fault that it exists) adds to it. he barely has time to process that when hwylryn sees fit to stomp on his corpse. kissing skin he didn't even know was sensitive is unfair enough, but the real killer is:
cute? cute??????
he turns back to refute this slander, when he's hit with a second kiss on the lips.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
what was he screaming about again? he doesn't remember, all he can remember is the feeling of hwylryn's lips on his. again he doesn't linger, but this time he doesn't turn away.
why dodge if you're already dead. ]
You—I—just kill me already!
